A follow-up to the author's well-known 1998 text On Book Design, this book looks at how contemporary British and US book designers think about and practice their craft. It will serve as a textbook for design students in book design or typography and graduate students or interns in publishing, as well as a resource for readers interested in learning how books are designed and why they look the ways they do. The format is based on interviews with professional designers as well as the author's own views and experience. It is mostly divided into chapters on designing various types of books: nonfiction, fiction, cookbooks, plays, poetry, illustrated books, and journals. Additional chapters by other authors look at designing the Whitman font, beyond selecting and arranging type, and the relationship between designers and editors. The bibliography includes suggestions for further reading. The book, unsurprisingly, is very well designed. It uses a calm, monochrome focus and abundant clear examples of pages of designed text in many formats accompanied by analysis and interviews where the designer of the page describes what they did and why.
