As described in the introductory essay, scholarship on gender and sexuality is a particularly strong aspect of the burgeoning interest in ancient prose fiction. This volume presents 14 essays originally selected for oral presentation at the fourth International Conference on the Ancient Novel (ICAN IV), held in Lisbon, Portugal in July 2008. Papers are organized under the broad themes of gender and ways of organizing space, male identity and gendered ambiguities in the Greek novel, sexuality and eroticism in the Greek novel, and sexual identity and gender transformations in Petronius and Apuleius.
