With German cinema following the fall of the Berlin wall dominated by historical films, Frey (film studies, U. of Kent) presents a multilayered exploration of how German postwall films approach historical appropriation. He considers how films present their own interpretation of historical periods, events, and figures; explores those interpretations in relation to previous interpretations; and reflects on the influence of the contemporary moment in which the film itself was made and screened. He also considers how these German historical films incorporate, respond to, and rework film history itself, particularly with regard to the earlier New German Cinema School of the 1970s.
