Based on stories told by people who knew them, this book recounts the work of Ruth First and Joe Slovo in the war against apartheid in South Africa. It details their lives in the context of the period, including their partnership, and describes their activism before the apartheid regime came into power and how they became members of the Communist Party in the early 1940s and fought racism, class disparity, and oppression in the country. First was editor of the Johannesburg office of the radical opposition newspaper The Guardian, was forced into exile in 1964, and continued to be an activist through writing and teaching. In 1982, she was assassinated by the apartheid regime. Slovo lead the struggle against apartheid along with Oliver Tambo and Chris Hani, was the main strategist of the armed struggle, and was a key player in negotiations with the apartheid regime that led to the country's first democratic government in 1994.
