In the midst of a crucial period in the Irish Civil War, 1,200 recruits of Ireland's Civic Guard began a seven-week mutiny in reaction to the decision of the provisional government to preference men from the Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC) for senior positions in the Civic Guard. In this study, the author's primary focus is on the decision of the provisional government to establish a new police force modeled on the RIC. The book begins with an overview of policing in Ireland before 1922, then offers a detailed, day-by-day account of the spring 1922 mutiny. The study reveals the actions of the IRA in instigating the mutiny and describes the new government's response and the recommendations of the Commission of Enquiry.
