It was the Irish Potato Famine of 1845-46 that sparked research into what became the genus of pathogenic fungus Phytophthora. One of the arguments put forth by plant scientists here however is that the taxonomy of the past century and a half is wrong; they cite recent molecular evidence and call for a new family tree.
