Although it is now home to a housing division known as Jordan on the James, extensive archaeological excavations took place on Jordan's Point from 1987 through 1993. McCartney (research historian) thoroughly weaves together the historical records with data revealed through the recovered artifacts. The first chapter is devoted to the Native American cultures that were present when the first colonists arrived in the early 17th century, but it mostly focuses on what archaeological research reveals about the settlers who lived there after the founding of Jordan's Point by Samuel Jordan in 1621-1622. The volume is richly illustrated, with both photographs of archeological objects and paintings from the Colonial National Historical Park, Jamestown Collection. No index or footnotes are included.
