A senior historian at the Thomas Jefferson Foundation at Monticello, Stanton assembles nine essays published from 1993 to 2010, and adds two that appear here for the first time. The only changes she has made to the earlier essays is to cite sources that have been published subsequently, and to provide the full name of enslaved people if that has become known. Among the topics are Jefferson and his slaves, domestic servants in his White House, rational plantation management at Monticello, Jefferson through the eyes of his slaves, the Hemings family and Charlottesville, and descendants of Monticello's African American families.
