The Wendat Confederacy, comprised of four or five autonomous nations, had flourished for 200 years in the Great Lakes region at the time of European contact, says Laballe (history, U. of Saskatchewan). She extends the 17th-century Wendat narrative by tracing the dispersal and aftermath of the people. In contrast to a typical contact narrative, she analyzes the foreign policy of the Wendat in the context of a multicultural North America, where Europeans played a dominant, but not exclusive, role. Within the stages of resistance, evacuation and relocation, and diaspora, she considers such topics as Wendat war chiefs and Nadowek conflicts before 1649, Anishinaabe neighbors and the coalition, the country of the People of the Sea, leadership, women, power, and reconnecting the modern diaspora.
