Futuyma (State U. of New York-Stony Brook) has revised his introductory undergraduate textbook to incorporate new analytical and laboratory methods and new understanding of biological mechanisms. He begins with phylogeny as a framework for inferring evolutionary history, and with history as the natural perspective for evolutionary biology. Then he moves into macroevolutionary patterns, where some of the most important evidence for evolution can be found. His topics include evolution in the fossil record, the origin of genetic variation, the genetic theory of natural selection, conflict and cooperation, and evolution and development.
