Patrick Pye (b. 1929), an Englishman who arrived in Ireland when he was but a baby, has had a long and distinguished career in his adopted country as a painter and stained-glass artist. However, for the most part, he has been regarded as something of a maverick, someone who was essentially a religious artist and thus - oddly enough in so-called Catholic Ireland - someone who was an outsider and so not really part of Irish art history. This book, the first on the artist, aims to re-orientate the way in which Patrick Pye's work is contextualized. The biographical section demonstrates his long involvement in the Irish art world, in particular, in terms of co-founding an art magazine, writing several books and pamphlets on art, and also writing numerous critical articles, and so seeks to indicate his questioning, critical approach to contemporary art. In terms of his own painting, printmaking, and stained glass work, while a thorough exploration is made of his religious work, the author argues that the label 'religious artist' is reductive and inappropriate. Part of the wider argument of the book is that while the artist actually fits quite easily into the cartography of 20th-century Irish art, he really needs to be seen within the context of both Renaissance painting and European Modernism, a modernism that is explored in the long-standing dialogue between his paintings and his prints. Particular features of the book are: a) the illustrated chronology which seeks to place the artist within the 20th-century cultural and historical contexts; b) a detailed bibliography; c) an outline catalogue raisonne of the artist's prints; and d) a checklist of the artist's paintings.
