This biographical work discusses Charles Grave Rawlings, the author's great uncle, and his alleged murder of a cousin in 1925. This event plays out against the backdrop of a struggling rural Georgia that never quite recovered from the Depression of 1920-21 even as the rest of the nation entered the Roaring Twenties. Although usually blamed on the arrival of the boll weevil, the downward slide of the economy had as much to do with the black population migrating to the north in large numbers. Rawlings cites a number of contemporary newspapers, along with US and Georgia government documents from throughout the 20th century. A few black and white photographs of people and 19th century buildings are also scattered throughout the text.
