The 10th publication in the American Psychological Association's Handbooks in Psychology series takes on a subject that has become accepted in the discipline but started out in something of a stepchild status, overshadowed until about the 1960s, reflecting the field of psychology's initial modeling on the hard sciences. The first volume of this two-volume set addresses theory and research in 29 contributed chapters. Arrangement is in sections on conceptual and professional issues, ethnic minority research and methods, individual differences, social and developmental processes, and community and organizational perspectives. The second volume, an applications and training, contains 37 chapters on historical and professional perspectives; stress, adjustment, and positive psychology; diagnosis and assessment; psychopathology; clinical interventions; applied and preventive psychology; and training and supervision.
