It is probably the most famous unmade film of all time. After the wild success of La Dolce Vita and the less enthusiastic welcoming of 8 1/2, Fellini planned to makeThe Journey of G. Mastoama but it never saw the light. He took bits and pieces from it to use in other films, but until recently there was no accounting for the film's script, as it were, or further evidence that the film would have existed if the finances had worked out. This presents a full English translation of the film and accompanying notes, along with explanatory material that tracks the birth and demise of the film. It is fascinating to see what could have been, but one gets the feeling that merely running out of money was not the entire answer; Fellini had hit on a dry spell and really wanted to go another direction in his film making.
