<DIV><p><I>War of Streets and Houses</I> is named after General Marshal Thomas Bugeaud's nineteenth century essay; the first European manual for the preparation and conduct of counter-guerilla urban warfare. The text greatly influenced Baron Haussmann’s famous re-development of Paris, and the planning of modern cities. In 2012, Sophie Yanow participated in the massive Montreal student strikes. In the midst of protesting crowds and police kettles, the military origins of urban planning suddenly became an undeniable reality. Yanow’s most ambitious work to date deftly melds the history of urban planning, theories of control, and personal experiences of the city and political activism.</p><p><B>Sophie Yanow</B> grew up in the woods just north of San Francisco, California. In the fall of 2011 she moved to Montreal, Quebec, where she joined the well regarded Colosse comics collective. In Situ, a collection of journal comics documenting her transition to Montreal, won wide acclaim in the United States and Canada. Her work has also frequently appeared online in venues such as Top Shelf Comix and <I>The Rumpus</I>.</p></DIV>
