Sumarsam (music, Wesleyan U.) has been a student, teacher, and performer of gamelan in Indonesia and the US for most of his life. In this study, he draws on his academic background in ethnomusicology to explore the complex relationship between the gamelan music of Java (Indonesia) and the West. In sections on hybridity in Javanese performing arts and gamelan as an intercultural object, he covers performing colonialism, performing the nation-state, Opera Dionegoro, deterritorializing and appropriating gamelan, and cross-cultural perspectives on gamelan theory: metaphorical readings of gamelan.
