Benjamin Peirce gained international prominence in nineteenth-century American science from his work on the perturbations<br />of Neptune. He played an important role in the education of many American scientists. The intellectual tradition in Peirce’s family is apparent from his feminist mother and scholarly father and climaxes in Peirce’s son, Charles, perhaps the most exceptional mind the United States has yet produced.
