Kansu (history, Middle East Technical U.) examines the domestic politics from the opening of the Parliament in late 1908 to the re-capture of constitutional government in early 1913. Most accounts, he says, view the period as if conditions were normalized immediately after the revolution, but he finds it to have been a time of relentless struggle over the political future of Turkey. He argues that the revolution was no mere restoration of the Constitution of 1876, but sought to effect a fundamental change in the political structure, and that it brought an end to the Ottoman Empire in more senses than one by replacing the absolutism and everything that reminded of it with a modern, centralized state actively engaged in promoting capitalist relations of production in the economy and upholding a parliamentary form of government in politics.
