This is the 11th publication in the American Psychological Association's Handbook series, which is intended for an audience of researchers, clinicians, students, and practitioners in allied fields. The introductory essay surveys the "fraught relationship" between the discipline of psychology and the complexities of human sexuality: on the one hand psychology has contributed to investigation more extensively than other disciplines; while on the other hand, a relatively narrow range of research concerns has been seen as legitimate. The series editors state that this set represents a "watershed moment not only for the field of sexuality scholarship but for the discipline of psychology." Written primarily by authors based in the US and Canada, this two-volume set consists of 25 chapters in the first volume, which focuses on person-based approaches, and 13 chapters in the second volume focusing on contextual approaches. Broad themes in the first volume include methodologies of sexuality research; dimensions of sexuality (e.g. biology, desire, pleasure, diversity, violence); sexuality development; same-sex sexuality; and such issues as HIV/AIDS prevention, reproductive health, and transgender identity. Volume 2 addresses commodification of sex (pornography, sex work); treating sexuality (psychotherapy, history of sexual medicine); legal rights and social change; and public institutions--social policy, education, entertainment media, and religion.
