Emison, an environmental scientist and historian, examines the weak and circumstantial evidence against James Earl Ray in the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. He considers Ray's alleged motive for the assassination, viewing it as inadequate, and looks at the stronger motive others had to murder King. He explores whether Ray could commit the crime and the implausibility of him doing so without help, and also challenges the work of four authors who wrote about the assassination: William Bradford Huie, George E. McMillan, Gerald Posner, and Hampton Sides. He then provides a theory of the crime and Ray's role as a patsy and identifies the parties responsible for King's assassination within the CIA.
