While there is an extensive literature concerning Jewish mass migration from the Russian and Austro-Hungarian Empires between the early 1880s and the mid 1920s, Brinkmann (Jewish studies and history, Penn State U.) notes that there are still surprising research gaps, particularly in terms of contextualizing the Jewish experience against the background of larger movements of people across Central and Western Europe, as well as the migrant experience within transitional countries such as Scandinavia, Germany, and Britain. The seven essays he presents here begin to fill those gaps, exploring aspects of the Jewish migration experience in aforementioned transitional countries and across the Atlantic.
