Edited by Anat Pick and Guinevere Narraway, this collection of academic essays on cinema is designed for specialists and students in film theory. It is not a collection on nature films, scientific films, or the ecological uses of cinema; "nature" here is a conceptual trope which mostly ties together academic essays using ideas of nature as metaphors for issues in class struggle, queer studies, colonialism, and so on. International authors are represented. One essay considers the uses of propaganda film as a tool for animal-rights activism. A few essays bring up nature film; the authors are mostly critical of it as a mainstream phenomenon, and dismiss or oppose the idea of positive contact between humans and other aspects of the living world.
