Vernon offers this collection of stories and documents pertaining to European shipwrecks on the southeast African coast between the 1500-1700s, including the famous Grosvenor. Maps and photographs of artifacts illustrate the accounts, with chapters organized in a thematic order. First the background of maritime trade with the East is outlined, and the journeys are discussed from the point of view of voyage objectives and survivor experiences. Cultural interactions are examined, including the point of view of indigenous people, slaves who settled after shipwrecks, and the differential success of respectful and arrogant arrivals.
