Since its inception in 1996, jamie Fobert Architects (jFA) has had a<br><br>reputation for innovative and inspiring design, including residential,<br><br>commercial and cultural work. The practice has demonstrated a consistent<br><br>approach to resolving the ambitions of the client and the complexities<br><br>of the site into a tactile architecture of volume, material and light.<br><br>This book explores jFA's method of working by examining a selection<br><br>of the practice's work from two perspectives, looking at completed<br><br>buildings as embedded spaces and examining 'up-close' details and<br><br>materiality. The practice's residential projects, located both nationally<br><br>and internationally, are celebrated for their sensitivity to the historic<br><br>context which they sympathetically partner with contemporary design<br><br>concerns. Retail projects, for clients including Givenchy, Selfridges<br><br>and versace, have offered the opportunity to explore new ideas and<br><br>experiment with materiality. The firm has also worked with a number<br><br>of artists and key arts institutions such as Tate Britain, Tate Modern,<br><br>Frieze Art Fair, v&A and the new Center for Contemporary Culture in<br><br>Moscow. The practice has won three major public commissions for<br><br>extensions to Tate St Ives, Charleston Farmhouse and Kettle's Yard<br><br>Gallery, and garnered awards such as the Manser Medal and RIBA<br><br>and English Heritage Award for Building in an Historic Context.<br><br>Following his graduation from the University of Toronto, Fobert went on<br><br>to head David Chipperfield Architects' Berlin office before teaching at<br><br>leading European architectural schools and establishing his own practice.
