This textbook is designed for mental health and social service providers and advanced students planning clinical residencies. The author points out that studies show a majority of mental health providers will encounter clients who are suicidal, a risk to others, or a risk to themselves, and half will encounter situations of physical danger, but few clinical programs provide training in dealing with mental health emergencies. This book is designed to do so. It is organized in block text with few checklists, and so functions more as a textbook than a guide. It offers theories, hypothetical case studies, and much practical information on evaluating risk, controlling the clinician's own stress, and dealing with legal and malpractice fears. Reading stress behavior and assessing risk across cultures or with language barriers is not discussed. In case studies, the book tends to err on the side of detaining clients in ways psychologists may find more useful than social workers dealing with low-income families.
