<p>This book deals with the design of power magnet devices including inductors, transformers, electromagnets, and rotating electric machinery. Unlike many design books which focus only on design considerations, this book sets forth those design considerations in the context of a structured design approach based on formal single-and multi-objective optimization. For this reason, the book opens with a discussion of evolutionary computing based optimization. Next, the magnetic analysis techniques useful to the design of all the devices considered in the book are set forth. This is followed by chapters on inductor and transformer design so readers can start the design process early in a course. Force and torque production and the design of an electromagnet (a solenoid) are next considered. After the reader has a good grasp of the formal design process, a more detailed consideration of loss mechanisms including core loss, skin effect, and proximity effects is set forth. The design case studies of the early part of the book are then revisited considering the aforementioned loss mechanisms. Next, rotating electric machinery is considered featuring the design of a permanent magnet ac machine. The book closes with a discussion of enhancements to the design approach such as incorporation of thermal analysis.</p>
