A cross between memoir, biography, and coffee-table photographic history book, this volume covers the author's visits to, and photographs of, WWI battlefield sites and the American Battle Monuments Commission's cemeteries and monuments. His grandfather was an infantryman during the war, who grew up in in the pioneer town of Denver, Colorado, and was the son of Swedish immigrant parents. The book follows this man's war diary. Like most war diaries, it is terse and focused on food, sleep, and work (in this case, often digging fox holes and “keeping busy,” a medic's euphemism for carrying the wounded and dead). The author of this book expands these brief excerpts with a biography of his grandfather, information about the progress of the war at the front recorded, maps of his grandfather's route, memoir of his visits to war memorial events in France, and color photographs of battlefields and memorials. The photographs are professionally done, and the book's images occasionally evoke some shock at the human realities behind the words of a diary of war written in 1918.
