Staddon analyzes science, policy, history, and current discourse around tobacco smoking, arguing that current social treatment of the issue does not line up with what the hard available data shows. He starts straight off with the question of what the common good is, even at the point of whether widespread longevity should be a public goal, then critiques the typical presentation of science on the topic, particularly on the topic of passive smoking. He argues against the contention that smokers are costly to society, then moves on to law and politics around tobacco and the Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement (MSA).
