Toch looks back on the work he has done as a social psychologist with prisons and police. He describes his education and influences, his study of violence perception and prison inmates, and his work to improve the life chances of former prisoners by creating new careers in which they provide rehabilitative services to their peers, with police officers to decrease police violence, with suicidal prisoners and those in crisis, to democratize prisons by giving prisoners roles in decision making, to nurture responsible behavior in inmates, to build a sense of advancement in long prison terms using training and opportunities for development, to address confrontation and promote de-escalation, and to change solitary confinement units.
