On March 24, 1989, the Exxon Valdez ran aground on Bligh Reef in Alaska's Prince William Sound and began leaking oil at a rate of 14,000 gallons per minute. This account, told largely through the lens of her herring fisherman husband Bobby Day, proceeds from the day of the catastrophe to the finalized court decisions in May 1994. An epilogue, however, recounts the continued reduction of the settlement amount by various courts and its eventual decrease from five billion dollars to $400 million. Angela Day supplements information gained from interviews with Valdez residents with consultations of historical documents from the Cordova District Fishermen United and the Alaska Forum for Environmental Responsibility.
