Drawing on newspaper articles, memoirs, Works Progress Administration State Guides, and other sources, Kastner, a long-distance runner and author, documents the 1929 Bunion Derby, the second and last of two trans-America footraces from New York City to Los Angeles. He follows the 77 runners through each leg of the competition and describes how they ran about 46 miles each day, how Johnny Salo and Pete Gavuzzi were frontrunners throughout the race, the physical challenges the runners experienced, the top ten finishers, how the prize was paid for by a vaudeville company created by race director Charley Pyle, and what happened to the key figures after the race.
