Jurji Zaidan was a leading thinker, writer, and publisher of the Arab Nahda, the Arab cultural revolution of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when modern Arabic print language was created and rapidly became a part of an emerging Arab identity. This study demonstrates how Zaidan’s secular analysis of history and language influenced the evolution of his pan-Arab nationalist thought. The first part of the book charts his career, examines his writings in the political and cultural context of his time, and details his pioneering role in sustaining the Arab nationalist movement. Part 2 collects articles and book excerpts by Zaidan; these writings are grouped in sub-sections on religion and science, language, history, society and ethics, and nationalism. The last section of the book contains an extensive general bibliography on Zaidan and his works, a glossary of Arabic terms, and a bibliography of sources quoted in this book.
