For the last 30 years the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) has provided education and food to low-income people who have little time and money available to prepare nutritious food and are at risk for increased rates of nutrition-related diseases. The program includes food packages specific to infants, children, their mothers and others, and this report shows how WIC should modify the contents and quantities in food packages to better reflect current understanding of nutrition. The report covers nutrient and food priorities, the process a committee of experts used to propose revisions, the content of the revised food packages and major changes from the packages now distributed, and recommendations for assessing the proposed revisions. The report recommends increased flexibility and variety, better nutrition education and product availability, and increased promotion and support of breastfeeding.
