Long investigates why Malayness remains so important in an area of Indonesia that has long been culturally diverse, and develops a conceptual framework for the study of nascent autonomy that could also be applied elsewhere. He grapples with matters of long-standing interest for scholars of Southeast Asia, such as the nature of Malay identity; the sociality and politics of plural societies; the consequences of Indonesia's post-authoritarian turn to decentralization and democracy; and the intersection of local, national, and transnational registers of citizenship and belonging in the Riau Archipelago today.
