Author Frey wants to understand if and how French cinema has shaped, or been a conduit for nationalism. Besides cinema itself, he looks at analytical writing, press reviews, writings from specialist periodicals and film festivals. The material includes exclusionary, implicitly racist and anti-Semitic discourses. The theoretical ideas that inform research developed in the book are "political myth" and "film event." "Political myth" has to do with stories, especially the element of repeated political subtexts, making an impact on society. By "film event," the author means the way that release and distribution of films provoke political melees of various sizes. The book is organized into two parts. In the first, consisting of three chapters, projections of myths about the grandeur and glory of France take stage. The second part deals with more negative discourses and film events, where cinema has expressed anxiety or concern about non-French Others.
