This volume outlines a person-centered approach to more empathic healthcare conversations using the CARE (connecting, assessing, responding, and empowering) approach. The approach is based on the Consultation and Relational Empathy Measure used to measure the clinical encounter between patient and practitioner and focuses on understanding the patient's situation, perspective, and feelings; communicating that understanding and checking its accuracy; and acting on that understanding with the patient in a helpful way. The volume contains eight modules (with exercises and worksheets) describing the CARE approach, including the attitudes, beliefs, and values the practitioner brings to each encounter; the components of the approach and how each can be applied and developed in practice; putting the components together and seeing it in action; the approach in the context of teamwork; and facilitating it.
