The latest edition of this textbook continues to provide a broad overview of the physiology of the structures that produce voice, along with a survey of potential problems and the resources for handling them. The material is organized in nine chapters: Voice: an Historical Perspective, Anatomy and Physiology, Some Etiologic Correlates, Pathologies of the Laryngeal Mechanism, The Diagnostic Voice Evaluation, Instrumental Measurement of Voice, Survey of Voice Management, The Professional Voice, and Rehabilitation of the Laryngectomized Patient. A number of case studies and therapy approaches appear in the chapter on voice management. Some of the chapters end with a summary, glossary, or a list of helpful websites. A middle section contains 32 plates with color photographs of conditions that affect the vocal cord. The fifth edition offers update descriptions of the three subsystems of voice production, along with an expansion of attention to vocal field histology and DNA microarray gene expression analysis.
