Out to Change the World

Stevenson presents this history The Farm in Summertown, Tennessee, which he and his partner joined in the early 1970s at the age of nineteen. The first chapter, “prelude to the sixties,” gives a very brief overview of the history of intentional communities as well as the developments in American culture in the mid-twentieth century. Leader Stephen Gaskin and the search for a place to found the community, including a failed attempt to set down in San Francisco, are profiled. The author’s personal narrative starts with the organization of communal living, the spiritual and economic life of the community, the attempt at a satellite farm, and projects for the colonially privileged founding members to give back to systematically disadvantaged populations. Next discussed is the Vow of Poverty signed by members, difficulties with financial sustainability, and the bittersweet Changeover in which much of the communal resources were divided and privatized. The book ends with reflection on how The Farm has continued to exist as the generations change and the hippie peak recedes into history, and presents the question of how long and it what forms its conceptual gestalt will persist.
