Mersky provides readers with the first complete biography of E. L. “Whitey” Freightner, one of the last surviving World War II U.S. Navy pilots. The story begins in Freightner’s Ohio childhood hometown, and then takes the reader through the pilot’s training to be a Navy pilot, through the major action seen by the subject through the end of World War II, into his work as a test pilot, and into his later career as a respected officer at various postings both in the U.S. and abroad.
