Pagès presents readers with an examination of an extremist sect, the Shi’ite Nizary Isma’ilis, the Assassins, providing a case study in the application of Western ideas of the exotic Muslim “other” to medieval texts. The author has organized the main body of her text in five chapters, devoted to history and historiography in general, early impressions of the Nizari Isma’ilis, the three kings, exoticizing the Assassins in the thirteenth century, and the Assassin Princess.
