Brought forward in this history of the decade in the United States, among other things, are Roosevelt's radical politics and how he was a "traitor to his class"; the extent of discrimination against African-Americans and their changing image; the development of the labor movement and some of the important labor strikes; the changing roles of men and women in a depressed economy; the plight of single women and the emergence of first-wave feminism; an alternative insight into the media; and the Dust Bowl as a result of large-scale industrial agriculture. The four co-authors, in other words, have a progressive political stance on the times. They highlight the trials of ordinary people during an economically devastating period.
