The author traces the development of two stereotypes of black masculinity in American film from 1903 to 2003--the shaman and the scoundrel--and their portrayal by Sam Lucas, Paul Robeson, Sidney Poitier, Denzel Washington, and Morgan Freeman. He discusses the origins of these stereotypes in colonial times and minstrel shows, and the careers of these actors, particularly their roles in Uncle Tom's Cabin, The Emperor Jones, Lilies of the Field, Glory, Driving Miss Daisy, and other films.
