This book looks at the rules of international law concerning the continental shelf, which are based for most countries in the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. The implementation of these rules is currently happening. The LOS includes a special procedure for countries that want to claim rights over the continental shelf extending into the ocean for more than 200 nautical miles from their shore borders. They must appeal to the Commission on the LOS. Since global exploitation of fisheries has exploded in recent years, this is a contentious issue. The book looks at the outer limits of the continental shelf in international law, legal aspects of the Commission on the LOS and its decision-making, the legitimacy of its decision-making (whether the representatives are free from outside influences and economic interests in the case, for instance), and the future of the Commission.
