With international contributors, Hagener demonstrates how film studies have always been a transnational endeavor concerned with the migration and traffic of images, people, and ideas. He elucidates the importance of the avant-garde, which he considers an ongoing movement and an important social and political force aimed at transformation. He seeks to expand on the existing scholarship, chart European interwar film culture, while taking into account many influences and numerous factors.
