There is an urgent need to understand the causes of wrongful convictions and to prevent their occurrence, detect those that have occurred, and give redress to the innocent who have suffered. This book tries to advance theory, research, and policy initiatives towards those ends. It aims to deal with root causes and consequences rather than immediate circumstances. Both scholarship and activism dealing with wrongful convictions have developed over the last 100 years, heightened in the 1980s by the use of DNA analysis. Here, the authors step back to investigate criminal justice systems, their actors, and the sociopolitical environments in which they operate to explain how and why justice miscarries. The book contains 20 essays, divided into three parts: Disciplinary Perspectives on Criminal Justice and Wrongful Conviction; The Criminal Justice System: Producing, Detecting and Remedying Wrongful Convictions; and Moving Forward: Advancing the Study of Wrongful Convictions.
