Pinsky (mathematics, Northwestern U.) updates again his textbook introducing partial differential equations to students who have finished calculus through ordinary differential equations. He provides physical motivation, mathematical methods, and physical applications, stressing the systematic solution algorithms based on the methods of separation of variables and Fourier series and integrals. No dates are cited for earlier editions. This third reflects responses by clarifying some of the examples and exercises and rearranging some of the material.
