British travel writer Norman Lewis was at various times a photographer and spy in Yemen and Europe working for the British government during the WWII era. In this book (first published in 1993 by Jonathan Cape), he describes his adventures as an 83-year-old traveling in western Sumatra, East Timor, and Irian Jaya. Writing with humor and irony to expose the mistakes of the government in the region, he describes the harsh treatment of aboriginal peoples and the destruction of the environment. He investigates the lingering trauma of the massacres of the 1960s while celebrating the survival of the region’s culture in the face of government brutality.
