From the September 2003 international colloquium Josephus Between Jerusalem and Rome, held in Rome 23 papers consider Flavius Josephus (37-100) as an author rather than merely as a quarry for information about the subjects of his histories. They cover historiography, literary questions, Josephus and Judaism, histories and history, and translation and transmission. Among specific topics are the impotence of Titus or Josephus' Bellum Judaicum as an example of pathetic historiography, Josephus and Greek poetry, his description of the Essenian morning prayer, whether Contra Apionem mirrors Domitian's crushing of the Stoic Opposition, and the Latin translation of his Antiquitates .
