The text is a compilation of home remedies used by the African American community in Michigan in the late 1970’s, gleaned as a result of two studies done at that time. The text begins by introducing the studies and explaining their parameters and demographics. The text then offers a comprehensive list of conditions treated with home remedies and herbs such as the use of flour to treat alcoholism and coffee to treat glaucoma. The next chapter offers a more in-depth explanation of why these treatments may or may not work, with research and study results given. The text includes color drawings of most of the plants and herbs cited. Also included in the text is a glossary of appropriate medical terms.
