Paret presents students, academics, and researchers with a collection of essays following the career of Clausewitz as he studied war in a complex late eighteenth-century society. Paret also examines the writing of some of Clausewitz’s contemporaries, both friends and rivals of the officer. The author has organized his text in six chapters focused on the study of the text and context of Clausewitz, Clausewitz’s and Schlieffen’s interpretation on the strategy of Frederick the Great, defeat in war and its causes, and a variety of other related subjects.
